Day 1: Street food and a salt plain spa

Fly to La Paz and drink in the colourful street life of the highest capital on earth, with a guided tour. Ride a cable car, check out the view at Mirador de Killi Killi and fuel up on highland food at local markets. Admire the monoliths of the Valley of the Moon and then catch a plane to Uyuni. Check into your unique retreat on a plateau overlooking the Uyuni Salt Flats, and tuck into a traditional dinner before hitting the hot tub

Today, your Peruvian escape continues across the border to Bolivia. An early-morning hotel pickup will take you to Cuzco airport for a flight to La Paz – the highest (de facto) capital city in the world. Take a private airport transfer to the city centre, and embark on a guided tour through this colourful metropolis in the foothills of the Andes, a whopping 3600 metres above sea level. Enjoy a spot of museum-hopping before admiring the magnificent viewpoint from Mirador de Killi Killi, with the bright buildings of La Paz sprawling out before you. All this exploring is hungry work, so we’ll stop by the street markets and tuck into delicious local produce from the highlands (think pizza-dough llauchas filled with creamy cheese sauce, and fried tucumanas crammed with meat, potatoes and olives).  Afterwards, we’ll hop on the cable car for alternative window onto the beauty of La Paz, before arriving in the Valley of the Moon. This otherworldly landscape is formed by a carpet of sharp clay and sandstone monoliths, and it’s quite something to see it in the flesh.  We’ll then catch a flight from La Paz to Uyuni, where we’ll head to our incredible hotel perched on a plateau by the world’s largest salt plain. The retreat itself is made out of salt blocks. It comes with cosy fires, a spa with hot tub and treatments, and quite sensational views of Salar de Uyuni. Chill out and fuel up on hearty Bolivian cuisine before a salty adventure tomorrow…

Day 2: A spectacular salt flat safari

Take a day-long jeep safari around the Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest salt plain. Stop at an intriguing steam train cemetery, watch how salt is processed at a local village and visit a “mummy cave” of ancient remains. See the giant cacti of Isla de Pescado and end the day with a sunset picnic on the shimmering salt flat shores. Then, see the stars come out over the vast night-time sky

Get set Flashpackers, for a full day exploring the incredible salt flats of Uyuni. Jump aboard a jeep safari to meander around this natural wonder, as we cruised across an unforgettable terrain of shimmering white salt plains that stretch as far as the eye can see. Bolivians once transported salt by steam train, and our first stop is at the train cemetery, where rusting engines and wagons litter the plains like gravestones. From here, we’ll head to Colchani village to discover modern-day salt processing, before driving to nearby Los Ojos de Agua (the “Eyes of Water”), to see where the salt is manually extracted from the land. We’ll also make our way to Puqara, located near the eerie “mummy cave” full of 700-year-old bodies (we like to put our fearless Flashpackers to the test…) and visit the giant cacti of  Isla de Pescado, a rocky outcrop in the middle of the elevated salt plains. Then it’s time for a picnic on the shores of the glittering salt flats, as we drink in a magnificent sunset over the plains. Our appetite for adventure suitably sated, we’ll cruise back to Uyuni for a dinner of traditional Andean cuisine – and panoramic views – at the hotel. With the evening chill setting in, we recommend you head outside and drink in a dazzling blanket of stars in the vast, salt plain skies. And don’t forget to spend a few hours wallowing in the hot tub, with a front-row seat to the dazzling landscape.

Day 3: Discover the delights of La Paz

Fly back to La Paz, and settle into your charming hotel in the centre of the city. Spend the rest of the day with free time in this sky-high city of wonders. Visit the Witches Market, look out for colourfully-dressed Bolivian cholitas, stroll through the art galleries of Calle Jaén and take the cable car up to Latin America’s largest open-air market at El Alto. Don’t miss the city’s eclectic bar scene for farewell cocktails with your Flash Pack crew

After breakfast, we’re leaving this world of surreal salty landscapes and heading back to the airport for a flight to La Paz. Take a private transfer to your elegant hotel in the centre of the city, and settle into your townhouse adorned with local Andean artwork. Then, the rest of the day is yours to do as you please in this sky-high city of delights. In a place where indigenous tradition meets dazzling innovation, there’s so much to do and see. Expect incense-filled churches and quaint cobbled streets alongside lively plazas and a buzzing food scene that specialises in Bolivian produce and liquor. Don’t miss the mesmerising Witches Market, where you can stock up on lotions and spiritual advice, and where ancient Aymaran beliefs are still practised. Look out for the Aymara Indian women of La Paz – known as cholitas paceñas – in their colourful skirts, shawls and bowler hats (arrive on the right day and you may even be able to catch a wrestling match between these formidable women). Weave your way through a maze of boutiques, museums and art galleries housed in the colourful 18th Century buildings of Calle Jaén, a relic from the city’s colonial history. Fancy a bit more retail therapy? Head to Feria 16 de Julio, Latin America’s largest open-air market at El Alto, to browse everything from hand-carved musical instruments to designer threads and lizard ointment. Come evening, toast your mini-adventure in one of the city’s many eclectic bars, including the uber-cool Diesel Nacional – filled with aeroplane sculptures and recycled car parts – and La Costilla de Adan, a two-storey bar museum decorated with antiques from local flea markets. Don’t forget, you can cruise the slopes between all of these stops on La Paz’s fast and reliable cable car network.
