What's included

With its mirror-like tarns and craggy peaks, the Lake District has long been a muse for creatives. Its rugged wilderness of mountains and moorlands inspired the works of luminaries such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. But even if you’re not planning on becoming a world-class wordsmith (#lifegoals), the wild and eccentric beauty of this UNESCO National Park provides amble breeding ground for big ideas. You don’t have to just brood in it, either – you can get stuck right in, with a heart-pounding adventure. Our mini-getaway to this glorious area of the world leads you on a joyous romp through the gorges and waterfalls of a remote stretch of unspoilt terrain. Leave the hustle of city life far behind as you go flying down natural rock chutes, heave your way over cliffs and clamber around crystal-clear mountain pools. We’ll give you all the equipment you need for this adrenalin-fuelled foray – think hard hats, wetsuits and life jackets – as well as an expert local guide to lead you through a series of stunning ravines. Drink in the splendour of the natural landscape and stretch your limits, with a series of challenging yet deliciously fun cliff-side twists and turns. You’ll be in the stellar company of like-minded travellers of a similar age and life stage to you, and they’ll be plenty of opportunity for bonding, as you haul one another over slippery rocks and shout out words of encouragement. This is the perfect escape for stressed-out city dwellers who want to supersize their summer weekend and grab an immersive taste of the Great Unknown. Meet brilliant new people and send your stamina soaring in the heart of the lakeside wilderness.

Experience

YOUR EXPERIENCE

We’ll start at 10.30am at Penrith train station, where you’ll get a chance to meet your local instructor and Flash Pack crew of fellow free-spirits. You’ll need to bring a towel with you, and it’s recommended that you dress in shorts, swimwear and footwear with laces (your trusty trainers are probably a good bet). We’ll get you kitted out with everything else that you need, including hard hats, wetsuits and other safety equipment. And don’t worry, you don’t need to be Bear Grylls to take on this challenge; a moderate level of fitness will be more than enough to carry you through. It’s more about having a laugh as we improvise our way through the craggy wilderness, with a few hearty challenges thrown in for good measure.

Once we’re fully suited and booted, we’ll set out to conquer the wild grass moorlands and gullies of the spectacular Lake District. Home to Britain’s highest mountains and largest lakes, this UNESCO National Park attracts plenty of visitors; but the sheer scope of it means that there are still plenty of hidden tarns and secluded crags to explore. Led by our guide, we’ll veer right off the beaten track in search of giant chasms and dramatic limestone slopes. With summer in full bloom, this is a gorgeous time of year to savour the beauty of the Lake Districts. But you won’t have long to dwell on the wild flower meadows or purple heather hills, as you’re catapulted right into the midst of the canyon action.

Scramble your way around deep ravines filled with naturally forming rock pools and craggy outcrops. This is your chance to leap joyfully off waterfalls and glide down nature’s answer to the most epic flumes around, under the guidance of your experienced instructor. Splosh through serene mountain tarns, swoosh into plunge pools and navigate a path around rugged cliff-side gullies. This exhilarating activity is not for the faint-hearted; you’ll need focus and concentration, and you’ll likely end up drenched. But it’s also super-fun, and offers a unique and immersive viewpoint on the natural majesty of the Lakes. Plus, it’s very much a team effort: whether you lose your footing or lose your nerve, your fellow Flashpackers will be there to cheer you on. And your trained guide is on-hand to keep everyone safe and happy, too.

The whole experience lasts around three hours, by which time you’ll feel like a whole new person. Your comfort zone will have been blitzed, and you’ll be pumped up and gladiatorial, having conquered the many pools and peaks that stretch across the Lake District ghylls. Plus, you’ll be on a high from sharing your adventure with a great new bunch of solo travellers in their 30s and 40s. Adrenaline suitably pumped, we’ll wrap the experience and take you back to Penrith train station; we expect to arrive there for 5pm at the latest. For those who fancy a greater taste of this gorgeous area, there’s an opportunity to extend the adventure with a stay at the elegant Inn on the Square Hotel in Keswick. Otherwise, it’s adieu to you, our brave adventurers. May the fizzle of your canyoning foray burn bright within you on your journey back home.
