In the age of constant connectivity and digital submersion, the idea of getting back to nature and disconnecting from the day-to-day rat race is more appealing than ever.  In light of this, we are beyond excited to offer a hiking, foraging, cooking, camping and gin drinking experience like no other, all taking place in the breathtaking Cornish countryside.  Join your fellow Flashpackers and wilderness chef Kieran Creevy in Kudhva, a unique and architecturally stunning retreat set in an abandoned slate quarry on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall. Your experience will begin with a guided hike, where you’ll learn to forage wild edibles to enhance your seven course sumptuous evening feast (and your gin of course!).  Chef Kieran is passionate about conjuring up gourmet food in the wilderness, and you will have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get involved as he shows you all the secrets of outdoor cooking. Your tasting menu will be accompanied by Gin from Snowdonia Distillery, enhanced and elevated by your very own, foraged botanicals. Then, bed down beneath the stars in Kudhva’s architectural hideouts and tree-top tents. Send your taste buds soaring and savour the world’s best outdoor sleepover in the company of like-minded solo travellers. Cut off from both reality and wi-fi, you’ll never want to leave…

Experience

Your experience

We’ll meet in the late morning at Bodmin Parkway station and drive you over to Kudhva, our unique camping space in the green valleys and Atlantic coastland of northern Cornwall. We’ll have the whole place to ourselves tonight, so settle in to a series of “kudhvas” – beautifully designed hideouts that are weaved into the forest canopy – and woodland tents that hang delicately between the trees.

Then it’s time to embark on your foraging foray, with your newfound Flashpacker pals in tow. You’ll be led by Kieran Creevy, an expedition chef and international mountain leader who has more than 20 years’ experience cooking in spectacular outdoor settings all over the world. Come summertime, Cornwall is a veritable garden of wild food and botanicals, and Kudhva is the ideal place to reap this natural larder. Set in 45 acres of a disused slate quarry overlooking the sea, the rugged landscape meanders across meadows, woodlands and sandy outcrops. Kieran will take you to the heart of this wild and remote terrain, showing you how to identify and safely forage edible treats. Gather yourself a harvest of king ferns, wood violets, honeysuckle and other delights, as you open your eyes to the riches of the natural world.

.

Having pulled together a generous yield, we’ll head back to Kudhva and learn how to mix it all up in order to enhance your spectacular outdoor feast. Under the expert guidance of Kieran, you’ll learn how to produce gourmet outdoor recipes and reap the splendours of al fresco alchemy. Then it’s time to put your feet up and toast your fellow Flashpackers over a magnificent seven-course tasting menu. As the sun goes down over the woodland campout, fire up your palate with a series of Kieran’s innovative dishes, served with a side order of vision and flair.  Delicacies such as seared scallop, with seaweed butter and nduja, wild boar and smoked aubergine tagine, gorse flower gin cocktails and wild fruit liquors provide a riot of flavour and colour. Each course is carefully matched with a drink provided by the distilling magicians at Snowdonia Distillery. Send your senses soaring and experience food in a whole new way, amid the tranquil darkness of a Cornish forest night.

Appetites suitably stoked, we’ll retreat to our boudoirs for the night; and the accommodation is every inch as unique as the rest of this adventure. Choose from Kudhva hideouts that stand high above the ground on wooden legs, flawlessly integrated into an ocean of foliage. Or, hit the hay in a series of tents that swing gracefully between trees, over waterfalls or above swaths of golden grassland. Either way, all bedding linen and towels will be taken care of – you just need to bring yourselves. Nod off to sleep immersed in the forest nightscape, beneath the stars and with rustling woodland all around.

In the morning, wake up to a cacophony of birdsong, fresh and revived from your night in the wild. You might want to hit the on-site hot tub, take a coastal walk or find a quiet spot by the sea to practise some yoga, before we gather for a Turkish breakfast. Savour the likes of fresh flatbread with sesame seeds and spicy eggs with yoghurt, overlooking the trees and coastline of your adopted wilderness haven. Drink in a few last gulps of countryside air and then it’s time to bid farewell on our joyous Cornwall jaunt. You’ll need to vacate your hut/tent by 11am but you can leave your things on-site and use the showers, if you fancy going for a wild swim in the nearby reservoir. Otherwise, you’ll need to arrange your own way back to Bodmin station, or you could always put off your return to the real world by staying in a local castle hotel (call us to find out more about this). Or, you might simply prefer to grab a horse and gallivant off into open hills. No judgement.

Your campsite and your guide

Kudha is an off-grid campsite set in a 45-acre abandoned slate mine on the northeast Cornish coast. It overlooks the Atlantic sea, with grasslands, forest and sandy outcrops all around. It’s designed as a beautifully curated space that encourages people to digitally detox, be creative and celebrate a simpler, more sustainable way of living. There’s no wi-fi and phone reception is limited. There are solar-powered shower cubicles and regular flushing toilets on-site, plus a composting toilet. Accommodation is made up of four architectural hideouts that are suspended into the surrounding foliage on wooden legs. Each offers a slightly different view of the changing landscape, and they come with large outside terrace areas, floor-to-ceiling windows and mezzanine beds. There are also six two-person tree tents that swing at various locations around the site: between the trees, across a waterfall or above golden grasslands. Fresh bed linen and towels are provided. This adventure gives Flashpackers exclusive use of the Kudha site, which comes with fire pits, a hot tub and bar and kitchen facilities. The rugged landscape includes a reservoir for wild swimming and places to practise yoga and enjoy coastal walks.

Kieran Creevy is a private chef who also happens to be an international mountain leader, with more than 20 years’ experience of coordinating adventures abroad. He caught the cooking bug early, learning skills from his father while still at school. As his work led him all over the world, he started building up a repertoire of food to be savoured in the wilderness, from North African tagines to Middle Eastern pilfas and Himalayan curries. He now produces fine-dining outdoor recipes for various clients and brands, and is a contributing editor to Sidetracked Magazine. Kieran believes that al fresco food shouldn’t be a chore or a compromise. He’s passionate about creating seasonal tastes that chime with their natural surroundings, and simple flavours that come to life in the Great Outdoors. “Good food can fuel our minds and our bodies,” he says. “I want to encourage more adventurers to enhance their food options and explore the vast array of what’s possible with great food in the outdoors.”
