Settle into your charming hotel with roof terrace before escaping the tourists to party with the locals on a jazz-fuelled night out on Frenchmen Street, with live gigs and bourbon cocktails
Today we’re leaving Memphis and cruising onwards to New Orleans. It’s a long road trip through Mississippi to Louisiana but well worth it when you arrive in this soulful city bursting with jazz and culture. Along the way, we’ll stop at Clarksdale to see the famous Devil’s Crossroad where Robert Johnson “sold his soul” all in the name of Blues. We’ll also swing by the Ground Zero Blues Club, for an atmospheric pit stop that just so happens to be owned by Morgan Freeman. We’ll then arrive in New Orleans just as the evening kicks into gear. Freshen up and relax at your contemporary hotel – complete with southern charm and a gorgeous rooftop bar, before we head out for dinner in the historic French Quarter. Our destination is Café Sbisa, one of the oldest fine dining establishments in town, and an authentic dimly-lit spot for some French-Creole cuisine. Here you can tuck in and enjoy a delicious taste of local life, perfect fuel for a night out in the Big Easy.
Not only is this colonial city the birthplace of Louis Armstrong and a hotspot for voodoo culture worldwide, but it’s also marking its 300th birthday in 2018. We’ll celebrate in style by making the most of this intoxicating city with a dazzling night on the tiles. Whilst the tourists descend on Bourbon Street, those in the know head to Frenchmen Street. This is where the locals go for some of the best live music in the city, with everything from jazz to latin and reggae lighting up the night. Immerse yourself in your steamy surroundings, with the bass thumping and saxophone solos filling the room. Get those Sazeracs flowing and let your jazz-loving soul loose to the hypnotic improvs that spiral across basement bars and tucked-away hot spots.More +
Day 6: A LEISURELY DAY & JAZZ-FILLED NIGHT
Enjoy a leisurely lie-in after your night out, sleeping off that hangover and relaxing at your boutique hotel. We recommend enjoying the incredibly talented street musicians in the French Quarter, admiring the colourful floats at Mardi Gras World or just mooching around New Orlean’s maze of quirky shops and art galleries. For those of you wanting a spooky experience in this ‘haunted’ city, check out the Voodoo Museum or the Museum of Death (it’s as dark as it sounds). Day 7: Unwind with life on the ranch
Take a short flight from New Orleans to Dallas, Texas, and catch a private transfer to your cattle ranch retreat. Settle in and enjoy views of the vast, rolling pastures before feasting on a Texan-sized dinner tonight.
Bid farewell to the Deep South because today we’re hitting the skies with a short flight to Texas – the home of super-sized steak and the second largest state in the US. Touch down in Dallas, where your transfer awaits to whisk you from the city to the vast Texan countryside. Your home for the next two nights is a working cattle ranch set on 800 acres of rolling pasture outside of Grandview, Texas. Settle into cowboy life here, drinking in the vast open horizons and pleasingly rustic décor. This evening, we’ll tuck into a typical ranch dinner – think hand-cut, Mesquite-grilled steaks and other hearty fare – where you can feed up on Texan-sized portions ahead of a day in the Great Outdoors. In the meantime, kick back amid a chorus of crickets and take it easy as the stars light up above the ranch.More +
Day 8: Ride the pastures wild
Saddle up for a morning horse ride across the remote plains and woodland paths around the ranch. Try your hand in a clay pigeon shooting session, before pausing for a Texan lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon as you please, relaxing in the Texas countryside or hurtling down a zip-line. Grab a front-row seat for a spectacular pastures sunset, with sundowners to boot
Rise and shine in the peace and quiet of your ranch, ready to embrace the life of a cowboy. Head down the dusty track alongside roaming cattle, before saddling up and hopping on horseback for a morning ride. The ultimate way to travel here, feel every inch the local as you roam across the ranch on your charge and reconnect with nature. After putting your riding skills to the test, your al fresco adventures continues with an exhilarating round of clay pigeon shooting. Fuel up on a Texas-style lunch, before spending the afternoon as you please back at the ranch. Perhaps the archery lessons have caught your eye, or maybe hurtling down the zip-line? Or you could always just kick back and take in the Texas country views. A fiery Texan sunset is then the cherry on the cake of a spectacular day. Grab a few sundowners from the bar and drink in those epic views.More +

There’s far more to Dallas than cattle-baron swank, and its beer gardens capture a fresh, bohemian spirit that is firmly on the up. Truck Yard, an “adult playground” with a tree house bar, live music and an eclectic series of food trucks, is well worth a visit, as is Katy Trail Ice House, for pitchers of Austin-brewed Pecan Porter served on a tree-lined patio. Come evening, take your pick of the awesome restaurants to toast the end of your adventure with a farewell dinner. Then, hit the town for one last night out with your fellow Flashpackers.
