Here at Flash Pack, we love the Great Outdoors, and are sheepishly guilty of not making the most of beautiful places right on our doorstep. But, fear not: former Royal Marine Commando Ian Finch is here to help. A wilderness guide and all-round adventure enthusiast, Ian is passionate about the lure of the countryside. Fresh from a 2,000-mile canoeing trip down the Yukon River, he’s all set to take us on an immersive hiking journey through the magical woodlands of Hertfordshire. This is a three-hour amble through the spectacular countryside around Cuffley, you won’t need to Marine-style quads to participate but Ian will keep it brisk in order to work up an appetite for your pub lunch afterwards. However, it’s a great opportunity to drink up the knowledge that Ian has of this spectacular area of the world, just an hour away from London. He’ll take you to some of his favourite off-radar spots amid the great old trees and winding footpaths of the forest, with a few Commando stories and nuggets of nature wisdom thrown in along the way. Once you’ve worked up a decent appetite, we’ll finish up with a hearty meal at a local pub – and a chance to knock back a beer or three with your newfound Flashpacker pals. Being in nature has been proven to make us happier and more creative, so soak up the therapeutic greenery, and shake off the stress of the city – all while meeting great new people along the way.

Location: Cuffley, Hertfordshire

All set for your walk in the woods? You’ll be met at Cuffley train station by Ian, your ex Royal Marine Commando guide, who’ll give you a brief overview of the day, before embarking on your trek through the ancient fields and woodlands of Hertfordshire. Ian grew up building dens and shelters in the woods as a kid, and he’s been hiking through the acres of oak and birch trees around Cuffley for years. It’s his favourite destination within a stone’s throw of the capital, thanks to its distinct natural beauty and a history that dates to the Middle Ages. Amid the thickets and great old trees of the forest, the hustle of the city will feel like it’s light years away, and you’ll get a chance to truly unwind and shake off the stresses of the week. Ian will take you through winding woodland paths to hidden and secluded spots of natural beauty, all while entertaining you with tales of his Commando days, and sharing titbits of info on the spectacular scenery all around. Make sure you stock up on snacks and water before you start, as you’ll be out and about in the wilderness for up to three hours. Then, it’s time for a well-earned meal and tipple at the local pub, famous in the area for its spit-roasted chicken, roaring fire and cosy weekend vibe. Cheers your fellow Flashpackers over a local ale or three, and let the feel-good spirit roll.

Hiking outside of London

Ian Finch is an adventurer in the true sense of the word, and his many different career hats are driven by a passion for wild landscapes and the Great Outdoors. After serving as a Royal Marine Commando, Ian honed his skills as a photographer, wilderness guide and adventure journalist. He’s spent the past four years travelling all over the world, leading expeditions and learning about indigenous cultures living in remote corners of the globe. His recent exploits include a 2,000-mile canoe descent of the Yukon River in Canada and Alaska (ranked as one of the top 10 adventures of 2016 by the Guardian), a journey inside the Inuit hunting culture of Greenland, and a trek across the Tibetan plateau.  He’s generated a fair amount of media buzz in his time, and has appeared on ITV and Good Morning Britain as an outdoor consultant. “My expeditions are never for achievement or success, but about the learning of something greater and deeper than myself,” he says. “They are a quest for friendship, wisdom and knowledge from people usually quite far away.”
