Hands up who wants to escape the city? This invigorating three-hour bike ride takes us right to the heart of the New Forest National Park, a spectacular area of ancient wilderness just 90 minutes by train from central London. Hop aboard your sleek mountain bike, and let an outdoor expert guide you through secluded forest trails and wild flower meadows. Perched on the Hampshire-Dorset border, the New Forest meanders between age-old woodland, vast stretches of heath and even coastal mudflats. You’ll be in the company of horses, deer and over 3,000 beloved New Forest ponies that roam free around age-old beeches, oaks and densely shrouded pathways. There’s so much to see here, and our journey takes us along the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, a route framed by towering New World trees that will have you marvelling at the magnitude of nature. At the halfway mark, we’ll reward our hard work by pausing somewhere shady and scenic for a luxury woodland picnic. Get to know your fellow Flashpackers – all like-minded professionals of a similar age to you – as you savour a hearty spread of high-end treats. Is it just us, or does food taste better in the fresh country air? Then it’s onwards and upwards, as we complete our bike ride in the most epic of settings. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Lycra fanatic to enjoy this experience: we’ll go at our own pace and take time to lap up the restorative balm of nature. Cycling is soup for the soul, so this is the perfect way to decompress and let loose after a hard week at the mill.

Your experience

Your cruise through the Great Outdoors starts at Brockenhurst station, just a 90-minute train ride from London Waterloo. You’ll be met by your guide, and get kitted out with top-of-the-range mountain bikes and helmets. Then it’s time to hit the forest trail, with your newfound Flashpacker crew in tow. Don’t worry – you don’t have to be the next Bradley Wiggins to take part here; moderate fitness is great, and your guide can alter the route depending on how everyone feels. An area of ancient wilderness that stretches more than 200 square miles over the Hampshire-Dorset border, the New Forest is virtually unchanged since William the Conqueror declared it his new hunting ground in the Middle Ages. It’s the perfect place to get lost in, meandering between dense woodland, vast open heaths and coastal marshes. Your guide will know all the best places to go for seclusion and wildlife, and it won’t be long before you spot the New Forest’s most famous residents; 3,000 wild ponies that roam free amid the forest pathways and wild flower meadows. Our trail also takes us through Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, a valley of the giants where towering Douglas fir, coast redwood and sequoia trees loom from every angle. Cycling among these behemoths, you can’t help but be humbled by the sheer force of nature. After an hour and a half’s ride, we’ll pause for a luxury picnic that’s all set up and waiting for us in a forest glade. Have a gladiator appetite handy for a feast of fresh baguette sandwiches, artisan pizzas and homemade brownies, amid a host of other deli-style treats. Food just tastes better in the fresh air, and the age-old beeches and oaks all around make for a super-chilled setting. Get to know your fellow bikers, who, like you, are urban professionals in their 30s and 40s with an unquenchable thirst for adventure. After you’ve been fully fed and watered in style, we’ll hop aboard our bikes again for a 90-minute ride through more of the forest, finishing back at the station. Salute yourselves, Flashpackers: that’s a three-hour bike ride you’ve just completed, in one of Britain’s most spectacular areas of natural beauty, while meeting like-minded Londoners along the way. We’d call that a weekend win.

Your guides

New Forest Activities was born in 2003 out of a passion for adventure, and it’s now the largest provider of outdoor pursuits in the National Park. Its mission is to provide fun and enlightening experiences in this reigning king of outdoor playgrounds. “Wild spaces, wild animals and ancient trees – you can really sense our connection to the past and witness how we’re shaping our future,” says co-founder Sam Sutton. “It’s great to be part of something bigger than yourself.”  Your well-qualified guide will be a dedicated outdoor expert, who will always go the extra mile in making sure that you have the best experience possible. He or she will have bags of knowledge and enthusiasm centred around this unique area of the world. The rave reviews speak for themselves, but you can expect top-notch equipment, coupled with an upbeat and accommodating approach. So, if you love the Great Outdoors as much as they do – you’ve come to the right place.
