Why we travel by overnight train in India

  • No visit to India is complete without experiencing the bustle of Indian railway stations, and this train is possibly the most authentic way to really get under the skin of the country
  • Plan ahead to keep yourself entertained and pack some playing cards, food and drink and as the AC gets quite cold, make sure you bring a jumper
  • It’s a safe, civilised and cheap way to get around, but be prepared not to have the best night’s sleep (pack ear plugs and an eye mask for the best chance of catching some shut eye!)
  • Forget media images of overcrowded suburban trains with people sitting on the roof – this long distance express has all seats and berths reserved
  • The toilets aren’t great so you should take rehydration tablets and try not to drink too much water if possible
