What's included

London is officially the gin capital of the world, so it’s exactly the right place for us to do a little – ahem – “research” into our favourite tipple. This juniper-fuelled jaunt around the backstreets of London is a wonderful way of delving beneath the surface of the capital’s rich gin heritage, and seeing the city you love from a whole new perspective. Hop aboard a fleet of vintage-style Pashley bikes for a gentle afternoon pootle down the quiet alleyways and cycle lanes that stretch beyond Lambeth to the riverside.

Head honcho at Tally-Ho Cycles is Jack Harris, a dashing Hugh Grant lookalike and friendly actor. Brimming with a deep-rooted knowledge of both liquor and London, his awesome crew of friendly guides are just the people to unearth the city’s hidden gin delights. Our leisurely spin includes a pit stop at a boutique distillery, where you’ll learn all about how the drink of the moment is made. It’s only polite that you sample a taster or two, polished off with a chilled G&T. We’ll glide onwards through some of London’s best-loved food markets, including a local hot spot that is over 1000 years old, and still thriving today. Stock up on delicacies from bustling pop-up stalls, and try another artisan gin or two along the way (#yolo). Beyond gin itself, our scenic ride takes in the wharfs and snickets of Dickensian London, and tucked-away squares of Bermondsey and Southwark. And all along the way, you’ll accrue a pub-quiz level knowledge of London’s gin colourful history, from the 18th Century to today. It’s the afternoon of dreams for dedicated gin-lovers; and a golden chance to meet fellow Londoners just like you, too.

Your experience

Get your gin face on – we’re ready to roll! Your journey begins in Lambeth, where Jack Harris, your expert guide, will meet you, and take you to collect your ride. Pashley bikes are about the sweetest wheels you could hope to get while gliding around the capital. These classic, vintage-style town bicycles are a mark of manufacturing excellence, and you’ll feel less Bradley Wiggins and more 1950s film star, as you take to the quiet back streets of Southwark and Bermondsey. This is a chilled ride, indeed: we’ll steer clear of traffic as much as possible, and make a beeline for cycle lanes and quiet alleyways. Jack has an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things juniper, so he’ll fill you in on London’s rich gin heritage (from the 18th Century to current day), as your leisurely spin gets underway.

Our first stop is a boutique gin distillery that’s hidden beneath the railway arches of Bermondsey. Learn all about the passion and craftsmanship that goes into curating your favourite drink, and see the complex distillery process at play. It would be rude not to sample the results of such wizardry, so we’ll give your palate a fair old workout with different gin tasters. Round the visit off with a crisp, cool G&T; just the kick you need for your next leg of the gin journey. Onwards you go, through the industrial splendour of Dickensian London. Discover old wharfs that Charles Dickens used as inspiration for Fagin’s Den in Oliver Twist, and pass through genteel Southwark gardens you never even knew existed. Our 3½ hour ride also takes in some of London’s most popular food markets, including a 1000-year-old institution that is still going strong today. Stock up on local delicacies from pop-up stalls and street food hot spots, as you soak in the sights and smells of London’s thriving food scene. Naturally, there’ll be gin here too, if you want to expand your repertoire.

With your belly riding on a gin-fuelled high, gently weave your way back to the starting point; your fellow cycling buddies in tow. This afternoon amble is a brilliant way to see London from a whole new perspective, while firing up your appetite for gin (always a plus) and meeting a host of friendly Londoners along the way, too. What’s not to love?
