Until recently the beautiful country of Myanmar (Burma) was a closed book when it came to tourists, but boy are we glad that us wanderlusters are now able to visit. This enchanting world of mystical temples, mirror-still lakes and lush valleys will cast a soothing spell on your Flashpacking soul. Our 12-day Myanmar escape promises a treasure trove of delights to all you intrepid wanderers. We’ll take you on a remote jungle picnic with a long-necked tribe, a private river cruise along the Ayeyarwady at sunset and a picturesque bike ride through the glistening temples of Bagan. This is an amazing chance to join like-minded travellers going off the beaten path and immerse yourself in this largely unexplored corner of Asia, amid swathes of bamboo forest, floating farms and lotus flower lakes. You’ll jump aboard a traditional long-boat to see the unique leg-rowing fishermen of Inle Lake and bathe rescued elephants at the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp in an unforgettable day out. We’ll also take a hearty trek through tropical hills of Kalaw, eat our way down Yangon’s legendary BBQ Street and be dazzled by enough golden temples to rival Michael Phelps’ medal collection. An adventure in this beguiling land is like nothing else on earth.

We are currently donating 5% profit from our Myanmar bookings to UNHCR

Itinerary

Day 1: A golden arrival in Yangon

Take a private transfer from Yangon airport to your luxury lakeside hotel. Meet your guide and fellow Flashpackers, and head to Shwedagon Pagoda for a private temple tour and your first Myanmar sunset

Upon arrival in this majestic country, you’ll be whisked off by private transfer to Yangon. Settle into your elegant lakeside hotel, complete with a spa and a swimming pool framed by coconut trees. Later, you’ll meet your guide and fellow Flashpackers, in time for a spiritual sunset at Shwedagon Pagoda. As dusk paints the sky in lavender streaks, wander the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda on foot, admiring the sacred site built some 2,500 years ago. Your guide will let you in on Shwedagon’s secrets, as you explore the temple’s beating heart: an 8-sided central stupa towering 99 metres tall and gilded with gold leaf. Watch the golden landmark turn to pink as twilight sets in – this is Myanmar, Flashpackers, and you’re going to love it!

Day 2: A BBQ Burma-style

Savour a lazy lie-in and then join a walking safari around downtown Yangon. Chill by your hotel pool before hitting Yangon’s night markets, with sizzling street food from the city’s beloved “BBQ Street”

Banish your jet lag with a leisurely lie-in and decadent breakfast. Later, we’ll set off for a walking tour of downtown’s fascinating architecture, both old and new. After returning to the hotel in the afternoon, it’s designated pool-and-chill time or you can go for a wander round the nearby Kandawgyi Lake and its tranquil gardens. As day turns to night, we’ll enjoy the colourful chaos of Yangon’s bustling street markets and search for traditional street food in China Town’s locally famed “BBQ Street”. Grab your skewers and prepare for a barby like no other!

Day 3: Smooth sailing on the Ayeyarwady River

Fly north to the ancient kingdom of Bagan and make yourself at home in your new oasis-style hotel with a jacuzzi, spa and pools. Take a guided walk around the city’s maze of ancient temples and pagodas. Hop aboard for a private sunset boat ride down the Ayeyarwady River

Fuel up on a hearty breakfast before your flight north to the ancient city of Bagan. Photographers, you’re welcome. This snap-happy paradise is bursting with ancient ruins, temples and pagodas that stand strikingly against the green vegetation. These temples were built by the kings of Bagan back in the 11th to 13th Centuries, many surviving earthquakes and Mongol invasions to become the archaeological wonder that they are today. Check into boutique bolthole Bagan Lodge and rest up by the two outdoor swimming pools here. There’s also a spa and a jacuzzi on-site, should you require a little extra R&R. This evening, you’re in for another blazing sunset as we cruise down the Ayeyarwady River on a mesmerising private boat trip. Drink in the hazy pace of local riverbank life on the mirror-like waters, with the sun casting a golden hue over the horizon.

Important notes

Fly into and out of Yangon International Airport

Domestic flights in Burma are included in the itinerary as it’s often the quickest way to get around. However, Burmese infrastructure is not something to be admired so it’s best to expect delays and consider it a nice surprise if a flight leaves on time.

Please be aware that the itinerary, activities and hotels are subject to change. These changes can happen with little notice due to availability, poor weather, seasonal changes, or other circumstances beyond our control. From time to time we may also make changes to your itinerary to try out new ideas and keep things fresh.
