Two of our favourite things become one in this eclectic tasting night in the heart of east London: step forward, whisky and Japan. Brothers Stephen and Simon Chan are the dream team behind The Bull in a China Shop, London’s only specialised Japanese whisky joint, and the achingly hip venue for your booze-laden mini adventure. The Chans are inspired by their grandfather, who ran the Fu-tong restaurants in Paris and London in the 1950s – a hot spot for stars such as Picasso and Grace Kelly. Expect oriental decadence laced with hipster cool (this is Shoreditch, after all), underscored by some serious whisky nous. The 100-strong selection here includes several rare editions, and form the basis for mind-blowing cocktails and unusual food pairings. Kick off with an award-winning Old Fashioned, before gathering round a fire in the backyard to test out different varieties of the good stuff. This private tasting session unfurls to the smell of burning peat from the fire, for a truly unique experience that will get your palate soaring. Either Stephen or Simon will be your guide here; both are passionate about Japanese whisky, and run regular “research trips” to Japan, to ensure they’re on top of their game. After an hour or so, we’ll head indoors for a lavish whisky-infused dinner. Bottom’s up!

Location: The Bull in a China Shop, London Shoreditch

  • Soak in the bohemian charm of London’s only specialist Japanese whisky venue
  • Try an award-winning Old Fashioned welcome cocktail made with 10-year-old Nikka Yoichi whisky
  • Sample four rare varieties of whisky around a backyard fire, in an exclusive Flash Pack tasting session
  • Goad your senses with the smell of burning peat from the fire, to complement the flavour of the whisky
  • Learn all about the history and tasting notes of different whiskies from the restaurant’s passionate founders
  • Feast on a lavish meal of whisky-glazed rotisserie chicken and other boozy delicacies
  • Meet and make friends with like-minded urban professionals

Welcome to an Aladdin’s Cave for booze hounds! On arrival at Bull in a China Shop, you’ll be taken past the elegant copper bar to your private tasting area in the backyard. Join your fellow Flashpackers around the roaring fire, with a peaty aroma in the air that brilliantly complements the whisky you’re about to taste. Take a look around you, and you’ll also spy some of the cutting-edge street art for which Shoreditch is famed. Then, it’s time to look alive for your welcome cocktail – an award-winning Old Fashioned that packs a serious punch. You’ll go on to sample four tantalising tipples, with either Stephen or Simon Chan – the restaurant’s founders – talking you through the tasting notes, along with a snapshot history of Japanese whisky. They’ll share the fruits of their incredible whisky-based knowledge in this hour-long session, so wrap up warm as you get stuck in. Afterwards, we’ll head indoors to the bustling bar area, festooned with Japanese curiosities throughout. Your table awaits, and the hour has come to sample the star of the show: succulent rotisserie chicken glazed with a slick of Nikka whisky. Marinated for 24 hours in Asian spices, ginger and yogurt, a lot of thought has gone into this signature dish, and glowing reviews suggest it’s worth every inch of the hype. The sticky, deliciously dark whisky provides a kick-ass final flourish. If you’re a veggie, we have a hearty mushroom wellington on the cards. As you eat, you’ll be entertained by ice carving demos from the whisky-loving team – who’ll also be able to answer any burning questions you have about your new favourite tipple. The main bar and restaurant are open to everyone, and provide an atmospheric buzz for your meal. But the fireside tasting experience is one of a kind, and cannot be found anywhere else.

Whisky tasting London

The Bull in a China Shop is London’s only specialist Japanese whisky venue, boasting a collection of over 100 select Japanese and Scotch whiskies. They take their whisky very seriously here, and carve the ice for every glass by hand, to ensure the best and most authentic experience. The vibrant all-day restaurant menu is led by the establishment’s passion for whiskies from all over the world, with whisky-glazed ribs and rotisserie chicken among beloved best-sellers. The trend for charcoal food is also alive and kicking here, with black charcoal brioche buns counting as a definite crowd-pleaser, alongside a chamomile and charcoal Old-Fashioned made with Nikka whisky from the barrel and homemade chamomile syrup.  Time out voted it one of the top Old-Fashioned Cocktails in London so its definitely worth a try! Speciality cocktails also include an Apricot High Ball made with Nikka whisky from the barrel, with apricot jam, brandy and soda. The interior design combines oriental charm with Shoreditch cool: think low-hanging lights, velvety banquettes and whitewash brick walls, plus a resplendent collection of oriental ornaments. One of the trendiest venues in Shoreditch, this is a favourite hangout for stars from the HBO series Game of Thrones; actors from the drama even helped paint part of a wall here.
