Georgia group tours for solo travellers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to Georgia

Why travel solo to Georgia?

Until recently, many people would have struggled to find Georgia on a map (or mistaken it for a US state), but this intriguing country is now firmly on the radar for adventurous solo travellers.

Cradled within the Caucasus Mountains, on the Silk Route between Europe and Asia, the former Soviet Republic has long been a melting pot of history and culture. From the chaotic charm of Tbilisi’s old town streets to Europe’s highest village, Ushguli, you’ll discover its rich heritage at every turn.

Delve into the birthplace of wine, Kakheti, where 8,000-year-old traditions meet modern viticulture. Explore the mysterious cave city of Vardzia, with its ancient houses carved into the cliffside, and trek to the remote hilltop Gergeti Church for breathtaking views of Mount Kazbek.

Best of all are the Georgians themselves, who welcome visitors like family. Don’t even think about leaving before you’ve experienced the sensory delight of a traditional supra – a feast of rich flavours and warm hospitality – best shared with new Flash Pack friends.

Top places to visit in Georgia

Tbilisi

Set in a dramatic valley, Georgia’s capital is a cosmopolitan metropolis with eclectic restaurants, traditional markets and a hipster nightlife scene. Explore the historic Old Town with its narrow streets, ancient churches and domed abanotubani (sulphur baths). Don’t miss landmarks such as Narikala Fortress, the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Peace Bridge.

Kazbegi

Officially named Stepantsminda but commonly known as Kazbegi, the valley town is a base for hiking and biking in the beautiful Caucasus Mountains. The highlight is towering Mount Kazbek (5,047 metres), but you won’t want to miss trekking up to the Gergeti Trinity Church, a picturesque 14th-century monastery perched dramatically on a hill overlooking the town.

Kakheti

Kakheti, in eastern Georgia, is the country’s premier wine-producing region. The fertile foothills of the Caucasus are dotted with ancestral vineyards and ancient monasteries where viticulture has been traced back over 8,000 years. Today, the area is home to hundreds of wineries, ranging from small family maranis (wine cellars) to commercial cellar doors.

Vardzia

Carved into the side of a cliff in southern Georgia, this Unesco-listed monastery complex is an architectural marvel, dating back to the 12th century. Explore its network of caves, chapels and tunnels, and admire its stunning frescoes and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The drive here is particularly dramatic, passing through narrow canyons and arid, rocky valleys.
