This Kandy to Ella rail adventure is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, and you’ll get to experience it on Flash Pack’s group solo trip in Sri Lanka. Starting off in the Unesco World Heritage city of Kandy, the train moves sleepily through endless swathes of green countryside and Tea Country hills.

It’s all about slowing down and fully immersing your senses in the surroundings. With a stop in the “Little England” tea-making town of Nuwara Eliya, there’s lunch waiting at a local restaurant, before you travel further into Tea Country for a stay in a boutique hotel and spa. On arrival at Ella, there’s chance to make the short 40-minute trek up to the town’s famous and stunning Nine Arch Bridge, where the curved track connects two mountains.

The four-hour bucket list journey from Kandy to Nanuoya, transports you through lush green tea paddies, dense jungle and lush valleys. You’ll take up residence in a third-class cabin, travelling as the locals do and experiencing a truly authentic adventure. From open doors and windows, you’ll spot tea pickers working in the fields and see children waving as the train passes through stations.
